My grandpa's name was changed when he came through Ellis Island and since he was German-Russian, I'm sure each time he spoke to someone they asked him his name. I'm sure he had an accent which would have made it hard for some people to understand him, so each person spelled it the way they thought it was spelled.<br /><br />Then add to that German Script which is sometimes hard to read and there could be many different versions of how a name was spelled.
